Our Raffles Butler’s Guide to Boston

72 hours to explore the City of Notions? Take the advice of our seasoned butler, who’s done it all before.

Day One

Morning

Boston Freedom Trail

Freedom Trail

Boston is known to be one of America’s most walkable cities. From the historic cobblestoned streets of Beacon Hill to the stately Victorian homes that line the Back Bay, walking is a great way to discover the city.

The Freedom Trail was conceived in 1951 to connect 16 landmarks and locations that played a significant role in the history of the United States. From Raffles, begin at Boston Common, the oldest city park in the US. Our favourite stops include the King’s Chapel, one of the finest examples of colonial architecture; the Old Corner Bookstore, a meeting place for literati Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Charles Dickens; the Old State House where Bostonians gathered under the balcony to hear for the first time the Declaration of Independence; Faneuil Hall, home of the buzzy Quincy Market; and the Paul Revere House, residence of the Founding Father during the time of the American Revolution.

Afternoon

Guerlain Spa at Raffles

After a morning of hot-footing it around the city, relax into the welcome embrace of the Guerlain Spa at Raffles.Your Raffles Butler is on hand to arrange a tête-à-tête with a Guerlain Spa Concierge. Try the Boston Energy, a full-body treatment combined with hot stones designed to enhance body dynamics.

A renowned alchemist for beauty and fragrance, the House of Guerlain has formulated over 1,000 scents since its inception in 1828. Our personal favourite is Neroli Outrenoir, a distinct scent of artistic style with endless depth and darkness, with notes of bergamot and smoked tea.

Evening

Boston Symphony

Boston Symphony Hall has one of the best acoustics in the world – largely thanks to Harvard professor Wallace Clement Sabine, who helped to predict the reverberation time before the building was constructed. In this City of Firsts, Tchaikovsky’s famous Piano Concerto No 1 was premiered in Boston in February 1875. Now in its 143rd season, Boston Symphony Hall offers a plethora of concert performances from virtuosos from around the world. It is home to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, one of the nation’s Big Five finest symphony orchestras.

Contact your Raffles Butler to book the best seats in the hall, and if a concert is not scheduled during your visit, head next door to the New England Conservatory where nightly concerts and recitals are presented by up-and-coming artists.

DAY TWO

Morning

Boston Emerald Necklace by Jack Cohen

Emerald Necklace

Start your morning with coffee at Café Pastel before heading to discover the Emerald Necklace, a seven-mile-long network of parks and series of waterways designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, America’s first landscape architect, who also designed New York’s Central Park. The parks that make up the Emerald Necklace include Boston Common, The Public Garden, Commonwealth Avenue Mall, Back Bay Fens, Riverway, Olmsted Park, Jamaica Pond Park, Arnold Arboretum and Franklin Park.

Opposite the Museum of Fine Arts, discover The Kelleher Rose Garden, born out of the passion for public rose gardens that swept the country in the early 1900s. The garden features more than ten classes and 200 varieties of roses.

The Emerald Necklace is the inspiration behind design elements of Raffles Boston, from the delicate bas-relief of the sky lobby (17th-19th floors) skilfully hand painted by artisans from Maria & Mike Jovanovic Atelier, to the sculptural fresh floral arrangements by world-renowned designer Djordje Varda and the bespoke floral-inspired glass chandeliers created by Czech designer Lasvit.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

In the Fenway neighbourhood, discover an art collection of world renown including significant works of European, Asian and American art. Designed in the style of a 15th-century Venetian palace, the museum is a repository of an eclectic collection of paintings, sculpture, tapestries, rare books and decorative arts. This treasure-trove is the capstone of Isabella Stewart Gardner’s decades of collecting from her travels with her husband.

The museum was famously the location of the world’s biggest art heist – which took only 81 minutes to pull off in one evening in 1990 – amassing important works of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Manet and Degas. Gardner’s will made an extraordinary declaration – that her museum was never to change, and that if anything were permanently changed, the collection would be auctioned and the money go to Harvard University. Since the robbery, the frames surrounding the stolen pieces, including those in the Dutch Room, have sat empty.

One of our favourite works inside this museum is the dramatic ‘El Jaleo’ by John Singer Sargent in the Spanish Cloister.

Evening

Scallops Amar Raffles Boston

No visit to Raffles Boston is complete without sampling the cuisine of George Mendes at Amar. Previously at the helm of the much-missed Manhattan Michelin-starred restaurant Aldea, Amar blends his Portuguese lineage with layers of experience gleaned from Alain Passard, Roger Verge, Alain Ducasse and Martin Berasategui.

Tucked in the heart of Raffles’ kitchens, The Chef’s Table at Amar is a theatrical setting in which to celebrate a spirit of conviviality and the chef’s brilliance. Discover the Maine Lobster with Azorean pineapple, and speak to your Raffles Butler to arrange an autographed tome of ‘My Portugal: Recipes and Stories, a cookbook’, penned by George himself. For a perfect nightcap, sneak into the Blind Duck, a speakeasy bar perched on the 18th floor, hidden behind an unassuming door.

DAY THREE

Morning

Boston BPL

Boston Public Library

Steps away from Raffles Boston is the striking centrepiece of Copley Square: the McKim Building of the Boston Public Library. The Renaissance Revival building opened in 1895, the first large, free municipal library in the United States.

This celebrated institution holds more than 23 million articles, including books, manuscripts, maps, letters, drawing and original works from the 19th century. Notable items include first edition folios by William Shakespeare, original music scores from Mozart and the personal library of President John Adams. Discover also the works of French painter Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, considered one of the greatest muralists of his time; and the open-air courtyard in the building’s core, based on the 16th-century Palazzo della Cancelleria in Rome.
